A new report highlights that Korean adults spend over a third of their day sitting, leading to various health risks. The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially introduced the concept of 'sitting disease,' emphasizing its negative impact on physical and mental health. Sitting for over six hours a day can increase early mortality risk by up to 49%, similar to smoking. While the issue isn't unique to Korea, the increase from 8.3 hours in 2018 to 9 hours in 2023 is concerning. WHO recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate or 75 minutes of vigorous weekly exercise to combat this issue. Activities such as golf, dancing, walking, cycling, running, and swimming are suggested to improve health. The report stresses the importance for Koreans to incorporate regular physical activity throughout their lives.
