Kim Ji-woo Marks 20 Years in Musical Theatre, Shines as Lead in Moulin Rouge!

Veteran actress Kim Ji-woo, who debuted in musicals in 2006, is starring as Satine in the large-scale Korean production of Moulin Rouge! at Blue Square through Feb. 22. Returning for the revival three years after the premiere, she says her performance has grown more mature and that the ensemble’s deepened acting makes the show feel refreshed. Kim recalls early struggles—transitioning from TV and film to stage and suffering from exhaustion during her first run—but now manages her voice and energy better, performing with greater ease. She credits guidance from senior performers (e.g., Hong Kwang-ho) and long rehearsal periods for her development, noting that repeated collaborations helped build strong onstage chemistry. Married to chef Raymond Kim and a mother, Kim says musical theatre remains where she finds her identity and creative vitality.
