Finding Local Revitalization in a ‘K-Vibe’

Travel’s appeal is differentiation, exemplified by Hokkaido’s success with exclusive products, strong storytelling, and premium local food that make visitors willingly pay more. Hokkaido leverages “limited edition” goods, airport-only treats, named scenic trees and narratives to draw tourists despite a small, shrinking population. South Korea has natural beauty and K-content (Korean cultural content), but its tourism and related economic benefits remain concentrated in the Seoul area. Local governments’ efforts to attract residents risk shifting population between regions rather than growing total numbers. The lesson: spread a ‘K-Vibe’—a blend of K-content, beauty, and food—to create premium, authentic local brands beyond the capital and help prevent regional decline. New local leaders elected in June should adopt this ambition.
