Starbucks Joins Dubai Dessert Craze, Small Bakers Worry

A craze for ‘Dubai’ desserts has spread across Korea, with major chains like Starbucks Korea introducing items such as the ‘Dubai Chewndough Roll’ (a roll made from kadayif — a Middle Eastern shredded pastry — filled with pistachio paste and wrapped in cocoa-marshmallow). Priced at 7,200 won and limited to six stores with two-per-customer limits, Starbucks will also add two Dubai-chocolate drinks next month. Other franchises including Ediya, Paris Baguette, and yogurt brand Yoajung have launched their own Dubai-style offerings. Small independent bakers and café owners express concern that large franchises buying up scarce ingredients like kadayif and pistachios could drive up prices and squeeze supply, hurting small businesses.
