The Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art in Washington DC hosted a gala dinner on Jan. 28 to mark the closing of the first overseas exhibition of the Lee Kun-hee Collection, “Korean Treasures: Collected, Cherished, Shared.” About 65,000 visitors are expected by the show’s end. South Korea’s Samsung chair Lee Jae-yong, members of the family, and museum leaders joined U.S. officials—including Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo (러트닉), labor and science advisers—and business and political figures to celebrate Korean cultural heritage and strengthen U.S.-ROK relations. Performances by soprano Sumi Jo and pianists and violinists accompanied the event, and Korean war veterans were honored. The collection tour will continue to the Art Institute of Chicago and the British Museum in London. (Lee Kun-hee Collection: works donated by the late Samsung chairman Lee Kun-hee)
