Coupang announced it will cut prices for its private-brand menstrual pads “Lunamy” to as low as 99 won (about $0.07) per pad starting next month, responding after President Lee Jae-myung raised concerns about high pad prices. The company’s CPLB unit said medium pads will be 99 won each and large 105 won, with bundled packs falling to domestic lowest-price levels. Coupang says it will absorb the losses from the markdowns. Lunamy pads are made entirely in Korea (domestic production) by a small manufacturer and are marketed for quick absorption, softness, breathability, and side-leak protection. The move is the first among major retailers to lower pad prices—after the president publicly suggested producing cheaper pads and even supplying basic-quality pads free to help low-income people. Major manufacturers have also signaled plans to expand lower-priced options. Policymakers and consumers are focused on high distribution costs (reported to account for about 50% of price) and limited competition in a market with inelastic demand for this essential product.
