Experts Warn: Never Wear Thick Winter Coats While Buckling Seatbelts

German auto club ADAC crash-tested dummies wearing heavy winter coats and found seatbelts can ride up over the abdomen, increasing pressure on internal organs and risk of serious injury or death. Thick clothing creates slack between body and belt, delaying restraint during a crash and worsening outcomes like abdominal, spinal, or head injuries. U.S. safety groups (AAA, NHTSA, AAP) echo the warning, especially for children who may slip from seats or car seats. Experts advise removing bulky coats before fastening the belt, then using a blanket or placing the coat over the secured belt for warmth. Also check belts are untwisted, lie across the middle of the shoulder (not the neck), and the lap belt sits low over the pelvis—not the stomach. Remember: without a proper seatbelt, an airbag can cause severe facial or neck injuries.
