The 14th Cheorwon Hantan River Ice Trekking Festival in Gangwon Province attracted about 150,000 visitors from Jan. 17–25 despite severe cold. Attendees walked on the frozen Hantan River to view volcanic rock formations and columnar joints, part of a UNESCO Geopark, and enjoyed attractions at Seungilgyo (bridge) including large snow sculptures, sledding, an ice playground, winter food experiences, and weekend busking. A quirky event called the "Ddongbaram Altong Gubo" (bare-chested cold-run) drew around 300 participants. Organizers estimate the festival generated roughly 10 billion won in economic impact, and police, fire services, and volunteers kept the event accident-free. Local officials promised more attractions for future editions.
