A Korean dessert trend called “Du-zzonku” (short for Dubai chewy cookie) blends the Middle Eastern konafa-inspired Dubai chocolate with chewy Korean textures. Originally, Dubai chocolate hidden-filled with kataifi (thin pastry) and pistachio tahini became viral online. In Korea, bakers combined that idea with jjondeok-cookie (chewy marshmallow-based cookie) to create du-zzonku, then adapted it further using local farm ingredients. A recipe substitute replaces marshmallow with chapssalddeok (glutinous rice cake), kataifi with crunchy sweet potato chips, and pistachios with ground pine nuts and green tea (matcha) spread. Seasonal Korean fruits add a bright finish. The home-made version keeps the chewy-and-crisp contrast, highlights Korean flavors and cuts cost significantly, helping the dessert become a national craze with long queues at popular shops.
