Gongju City in South Chungcheong is developing the Seokjang-ri World Paleolithic Park at the site of Korea’s first Paleolithic (구석기) archaeological discovery. With a budget of 22.2 billion won, the 32,095 m² project will include a Paleolithic education center, a 31-meter observatory, and experience facilities. The observatory is scheduled for completion in April, and the education and experience buildings aim for September completion; after trial operations the park is expected to officially open in January next year. Seokjang-ri gained attention in 1962 when American archaeologists Albert Mohr and L.L. Sample found stone tools (뗀석기) there; subsequent excavations through 1992 uncovered hand axes and choppers. Mayor Choi said the park will promote local history and tourism and help boost the regional economy.
