After BTS announced their world tour, global fan interest translated into a sharp rise in travel searches to South Korea within 48 hours. Hotels.com data shows searches to Seoul rose 155%, while searches to Busan jumped 2,375%. Key inbound markets fueling Seoul interest were Japan (400%), Taiwan (260%), Hong Kong (170%) and the U.S. (95%). Busan searches showed particularly dramatic increases from Japan (10,545%), Hong Kong (7,100%), Taiwan (1,275%) and the U.S. (835%). The trend matches Hotels.com’s Unpack ’24 report highlighting “tour tourism” — growing traveler interest in trips for concerts and music events. The report found 70% of domestic respondents are more interested in travel for concerts, and 43% would travel beyond their city to see a favorite artist live. Hotels.com concludes that major cultural events and live performances are increasingly driving both inbound and domestic tourism.
