Gangneung’s Bid for a ‘Korean Bayreuth’: Puccini’s Madama Butterfly Moves the City

Gangneung Symphony Orchestra staged Puccini’s Madama Butterfly in a concert-opera at Gangneung Arts Center. Led by conductor Jeong Min, soprano Yeo Ji-won (singing Cio-Cio-San) and tenor Kim Jae-hyung (Pinkerton) delivered powerful performances: Kim’s commanding tenor and Yeo’s expressive “Un bel dì, vedremo” were highlights. The production used restrained but effective video design to evoke a Japanese port town and deliberately costumed Pinkerton in a dark suit to suggest his moral failings rather than the usual white navy uniform. Critics praised the clear musical and visual direction but noted weaknesses: chorus members held scores onstage and some ensemble timing faltered. Gangneung’s orchestra, following last year’s La Traviata, now aims to mount Wagner’s Ring Cycle (a four-part, multi-hour epic), fueling hopes that the city could become a “Korean Bayreuth” (Bayreuth: German town famous for Wagner festivals).
