Despite a severe cold warning, major ski resorts in Gangwon Province drew large crowds: High1 Resort in Jeongseon reported about 11,233 visitors and Monayongpyeong (Mona Yongpyong) Resort in Pyeongchang around 10,000 by late afternoon. Other resorts like Elysian Gangchon near Seoul saw about 3,500 skiers, and many resorts also run sledding areas for families and couples. Winter festivals boosted tourism too: the 2026 Hwacheon Sancheoneo (mountain trout) Ice Festival reached a cumulative 1 million visitors, and the Pyeongchang Trout Festival remains popular with on-site tasting and events, including an upcoming ice-fishing competition. Local tourism officials say these events are revitalizing the regional winter economy and continuing to draw visitors nationwide.
