The famed Dutch painting Girl with a Pearl Earring (c.1665) by Johannes Vermeer will be exhibited this summer at the Nakanoshima Museum in Osaka — its first Asia appearance in 14 years. The small, enigmatic portrait, long celebrated for its mysterious subject, luminous ultramarine tones, and renewed fame after a bestselling novel and 2003 film, rarely leaves the Mauritshuis in The Hague. Its 2012–2014 world tour drew some 2.2 million visitors (about 1.2 million in Tokyo and Kobe), and strong Japanese demand helped fund the Mauritshuis’s recent renovation. The Osaka show (August–September) will also feature 17th-century Dutch Golden Age works including Rembrandt; exact exhibition details will be announced at the end of February.
