Label Debate: ‘Gimbap Gim’ Packaged as ‘Sushi and Roll’ Sparks Identity Concerns

A controversy has emerged in South Korea after some roasted seaweed (gim) marketed for gimbap (Korean rice roll) was labeled in English as “Sushi and Roll.” Professor Seo Kyung-deok flagged the issue on social media, arguing that using “sushi” risks blurring the distinct identity of gimbap and weakening K-food’s unique image abroad. The product packaging included phrases like “roasted laver for sushi and roll” even though the item is sold as gimbap gim. With Korean dishes such as gimbap gaining global popularity—helped by viral media moments and rising frozen gimbap exports—advocates say packaging should use “KIMBAP” (or “GIMBAP”) to preserve cultural accuracy. Online commenters and cultural promoters support clearer labels, noting that seaweed used for gimbap differs from that used for sushi.
