The Korea Foundation (KF) is sponsoring a retrospective of Theresa Hak Kyung Cha (1951–1982) at the UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA) from March 24 to April 19. The exhibition surveys Cha’s multidisciplinary work—conceptual art, film, performance, poetry—and includes never-before-seen early textiles and ceramics. It highlights her influence on modern and contemporary art and features works by contemporary artists inspired by her. Events during the run include a reading of her acclaimed novel Dictee (딕테) (a postmodern work exploring diaspora, women, decolonization, and multicultural themes), a symposium, and film screenings; a catalogue will also be published. Cha, born in Busan and later based in San Francisco, studied at UC Berkeley and was a leading figure in postmodern conceptual and performance art. BAMPFA holds many works donated by the Theresa Hak Kyung Cha Memorial Foundation. KF supports such international presentations to promote Korean art and cultural diplomacy.
