World-renowned Swiss conductor Philippe Jordan (52), former music director of the Paris and Vienna State Operas and incoming director of the Orchestre National de France (from 2027), will make his first appearance with the Seoul Metropolitan Philharmonic Orchestra. The orchestra opens its 2026 season with performances on Jan. 29 at Lotte Concert Hall and Jan. 30 at Seoul Arts Center, presenting Richard Strauss’s Metamorphosen (a chamber work for 23 solo strings and conductor) followed by Anton Bruckner’s final Symphony No. 9. Strauss’s work reflects loss and the collapse of German cultural life near the end of World War II, while Bruckner’s unfinished Ninth—performed here in the Leopold Nowak edition (레오폴트 노바크)—is celebrated as a monumental meditation on human suffering, salvation, life and death.
