Professor Seokyoung-duk Urges English Name Change: Call It 'Kimbap' Not 'Sushi and Roll'

Professor Seokyoung-duk of Sungshin Women’s University posted photos of domestic seaweed (gim) packaging that labels kimbap as 'Sushi and Roll' and argued on Facebook that the dish’s English name should follow Korean pronunciation—'Kimbap' or 'Gimbap'—rather than borrowing 'sushi' terminology. He noted kimbap's growing global recognition (seen in media like the Netflix animation 'K-Pop Demon Hunters' and in U.S. supermarkets such as Trader Joe’s) means it now represents K-food and should be named accordingly. The National Institute of Korean Language already set romanization standards in 2014 listing many dishes with Korean-based English names like 'Gimbap', 'Bibimbap', 'Bulgogi', and 'Kimchi'.
