No Room for Error: Korea’s First K-Smart Lighthouse Cosmetic Factory Slashes Defects with AI

In Chungbuk’s Eumseong, Cosmecca Korea’s smart factory—recognized as the cosmetics industry’s only ‘K-Smart Lighthouse Factory’—has transformed production by applying digital transformation (DX) and AI across all functions. The plant uses a digital twin to monitor large mixers, flame‑detecting cameras for real‑time safety, and a product lifecycle management (PLM) system that standardizes customer requests. Monthly output tops 1,000 product types, including 320 new formulations. Productivity rose about 19.7% and defects fell 30.8% after automation and data use. A new ‘recipe AI’ compares a client brief to past formulations and finds the five most similar products in 10 seconds—a task that used to take skilled researchers 3–4 hours—freeing thousands of labor hours per month. The factory aims to reach World Economic Forum ‘Lighthouse Factory’ status by 2028 to set global standards for cosmetics manufacturing.
