Gangneung Symphony Orchestra to Open 2026 Season with Puccini’s 'Madama Butterfly' Concert Opera

The Gangneung Symphony Orchestra will present a concert opera version of Giacomo Puccini’s Madama Butterfly at Gangneung Arts Center (Saimdang Hall) on Jan. 23 at 7:30 PM and Jan. 24 at 5 PM. Madama Butterfly, one of Puccini’s masterpieces, tells the tragic love story between a geisha named Cio-Cio-San and an American naval officer, Pinkerton, set in Nagasaki, Japan. The performances feature top Korean opera singers active on the international stage: soprano Yeo Ji-won as Cio-Cio-San, tenor Kim Jae-hyung as Pinkerton, and baritone Lee Dong-hwan, among others. The show is suitable for audiences aged elementary school and up; tickets are 20,000 KRW for R seats and 10,000 KRW for S seats, available via the Gangneung Municipal Arts Group website. Gangneung Arts Center director Shim Kyu-man invited citizens to start the new year warmly through music.
