Winter in Gongju: Chestnut Delights and Ancient Temple Treasures

Gongju, known as Korea’s chestnut city, offers a cozy winter experience blending food, history and culture. At the traditional Gongju Sanseong Market, chestnut-based treats abound—from ‘night sundae’ (blood sausage with chestnuts) and large whole-chestnut mochi to chestnut makgeolli (rice wine) and honey chestnut hotteok. Long-running shops sell out on weekends, and a roasted chestnut festival is held early next month. Nearby Magoksa Temple, founded in 640 and a UNESCO site, was recently highlighted as its five-storey stone pagoda was elevated to national treasure status; its distinctive “tower-on-a-tower” structure and bronze finial (풍마동) draw visitors, and the temple offers temple-stay programs and a peaceful 3 km forest path. The free National Gongju Museum is a warm indoor option with a revamped children’s interactive room themed on King Muryeong and the guardian Jinmyosu, plus an exhibition storage gallery displaying about 1,800 artifacts from the Neolithic to the Joseon era.
