Actor Park Kang-hyun: "Life of Pi" Made Me Stronger

Actor Park Kang-hyun is starring as Pi in the live-stage production of Life of Pi, adapted from Yann Martel’s novel. He took the role as a challenge and says performing with puppets (퍼펫) has been a unique, fun experience—similar to giving personality to dolls as a child. Unlike the film or musical formats, this production emphasizes live energy, dialogue and movement rather than songs; puppeteers (퍼펫티어) operate realistic animal puppets so well that sometimes only the puppets are visible onstage. Park—who is usually known for musicals—says the play has pushed him to improve stamina, acting technique and emotional continuity, and that the role fits his curious, open-minded temperament. He shares the role with actor Park Jung-min, from whom he learns through the co-star’s raw, fearless performances. Park expects the run to make him a steadier performer and hopes audiences will see his growth. The play runs at GS Art Center through March 2 and at Busan Dream Theater March 7–15.
