Gongju, known as Korea’s chestnut (밤) capital, offers a cozy winter mix of food, heritage and museums. At Gongju Sanseong Market visitors sample chestnut-themed eats like ‘bam sundae’ (blood sausage with chestnuts) and the famous albam mochi (a rice cake with a whole large chestnut), which can sell up to 3,000 pieces on busy weekends. Local bakeries and an annual chestnut festival add to the seasonal charm. Nearby Magoksa Temple (founded in 640) sits on Taehwasan and recently had its five-story stone pagoda elevated to national treasure status; the pagoda’s distinctive “tower-on-top-of-a-tower” design and bronze finial (풍마동) are rare in Korea. Magoksa is popular for temple stays and scenic forest walks. Warm indoor options include the free National Gongju Museum, whose renovated children’s activity room (where kids can dress as the ancient King Muryeong and play with ‘jinmyosu’ masks) and a visible storage gallery of some 1,800 artifacts make it a hit with families and culture visitors.
