Choreographers Jeong Hye-jin, Kim Seong-hoon, and Kim Jae-deok from the Seoul City Dance Company received the Best Choreographer/Creator award at the New York Dance & Performance Awards (Bessie Awards) on Oct. 20 (local). Their work, Ilmu (佾舞) — a modern reinterpretation of the Jongmyo Jeryeak (종묭제례악) ritual dance — premiered in 2022 and earned praise during a 2023 run at New York’s Lincoln Center. Selected from 12 nominees and among four winners, Ilmu was praised for its visually captivating, contemporary take on traditional Korean ceremonial dance, balancing stillness and explosive movement. The award marks the first time a Korean national public arts ensemble has won a Bessie.
