Tiny Dubai Chocolate Treats Spark Price Surge in Korea

South Korea is experiencing a craze for 'Dubai chewy cookies' (두바이 쫀득 쿠키), small desserts wrapped with pistachio and kataifi (카다이프) and filled with chocolate and marshmallow. Despite weighing only 40–70g, some sell for more per 10g than premium beef. Soaring global demand and a 'small luxury' trend have driven up prices of key ingredients—pistachios and kataifi have more than doubled in months, dubbed 'green gold.' Large franchises (e.g., Paris Baguette, Twosome Place), convenience store chains, and overseas interest from China and Japan are buying up supplies, threatening further price increases and squeezing small cafés. The rush has also led to supplier scams targeting urgent buyers. Industry views differ: some expect the fad to fade like past trends, while others warn Dubai-style chocolate could become a lasting flavor category that keeps demand high.
