In Seoul’s Donhwamun Gugakdang, master dancer Kim Woon-tae (63) is presenting an extended run of his signature chaesang-sogo dance (a drum dance performed while spinning a long white ribbon on the head) through Jan 27. The performance showcases virtuosic moves—솟음벅구 (a jumping drum strike), 자반뒤집기 (a 45° tilted spinning jump), and 두루걸이 (air turns)—and culminates in a finale blending chaesang-sogo with binari vocal passages, pungut (판굿) rhythms, and traditional drum and janggu dances by his all-female troupe Yeonhuidan Palsandae (연희단 팔산대). Kim’s style, called the “Kim Woon-tae school,” merges traditions from Yeongnam, Honam, and Chungcheong regions; his chae-sang (long white ribbon) materials—hanji paper and beads—are the result of long experimentation. The program includes storytelling and commentary by cultural figure Jin Ok-seop, and reflects Kim’s lifelong dedication from childhood with his father’s Honam women’s nongak troupe to international acclaim. Tickets are 30,000 KRW.
