The musical Ojjige Jaemissneun Gashinadeul, based on the real lives of grandmothers from Chilgok, won three prizes at the 10th Korean Musical Awards, taking Best Small-Scale Production (under 400 seats), Best Direction (Oh Kyung-taek), and Best Book (Kim Ha-jin). Adapted from the documentary Chilgok Gashinadeul and the essay Ojjige Jaemikke Naeium, the show tells the story of octogenarian women who learn to read and write at a local literacy school and discover new purpose. Around 20 poems actually written by the grandmother students were transformed into musical numbers, earning praise for its intergenerational appeal and everyday dialogue. The production, which was the most-nominated show this year and participated in the K-Musical Roadshow in Tokyo, will be restaged at the National Theater Haneul Theater from May 15 to June 28, 2026. (gashinadeul: a dialect word for women/grandmothers)
