Italian Dress Maestro Valentino Garavani Dies at 93

Valentino Garavani, the Italian fashion designer famed for his glamorous red gowns known as “Valentino Red,” died at 93. Over a five-decade career he dressed politicians and movie stars—from Jacqueline Kennedy’s 1968 wedding dress to outfits worn by Princess Diana, Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Julia Roberts, and Cate Blanchett—becoming a symbol of haute couture (오트 쿠튀르). He founded the Valentino House in 1959, partnered with Giancarlo Giammetti, expanded into menswear and accessories, and sold the brand in 1998 to focus on design. Valentino and Giammetti later set up a charitable foundation in 2016. A funeral will be held in Rome on the 23rd. Quoted by many, his line “I know what women want: they want to be beautiful” remains famous.
