Former Yongin University Arts Dean Kim Jeong-su, Pansori Accompanist, Dies at 80

Kim Jeong-su, former dean of the Graduate School of Arts at Yongin University and respected janggu (traditional Korean drum) player and gobaek (고법, pansori rhythmic accompaniment) master, died on January 17 at age 80. Born in Seoul in 1946, he graduated from Seoul National University’s Department of Korean Music and served as a professor at Chugye University for the Arts and Yongin University, later becoming Yongin’s arts graduate dean. He also held leadership roles including vice-chair of the Korean Gugak (국악, traditional Korean music) Society, auditor of Gugak Broadcasting, and chair of the National Gugak Center advisory committee. Skilled in jeongak (정악, court/classical music), folk music, and creative music on the janggu, he had completed the Important Intangible Cultural Property No. 5 lineage for pansori gobaek. Gugak Broadcasting will air a 55-minute memorial program for him on the afternoon of January 19.
