NASA’s Artemis II mission stack — the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and the Orion spacecraft — has been installed on Launch Pad 39B at Kennedy Space Center in Florida after roughly three months of final checks in the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB). The 5,000-ton stack was transported about 4 miles on the Crawler Transporter at a slow, careful pace and secured at the pad. Teams adjusted the Crew Access Arm (a gangway that helps astronauts board on launch day) during the move. Artemis II will undergo a Wet Dress Rehearsal, where cryogenic propellants are loaded and a launch countdown is practiced, before draining the fuel — a required test before crewed flight. If all goes well, the mission could launch during the first launch window on Feb. 6, with alternative dates available through April. Four veteran astronauts — three from NASA (Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch) and one from the Canadian Space Agency (Jeremy Hansen) — will fly Orion into lunar orbit and return to Earth to validate life-support and control systems for future crewed missions. Scientists view Artemis II as a key step toward building a sustainable lunar base and preparing for eventual human missions to Mars.
