During the Lunar New Year holiday, Korean travelers are choosing small Japanese towns focused on hot springs and relaxation rather than major cities like Tokyo and Osaka. Rakuten Travel reservation data shows Oita and Kumamoto prefectures in Kyushu were most popular. Oita is known for Beppu’s “hells” hot springs (Beppu Jigoku) and Yufuin’s Kinrinko Lake, appealing to travelers seeking onsen (Japanese hot springs) and rest. Kumamoto attracts visitors with the vast natural scenery of active volcano Mount Aso and mild winter weather suitable for golf trips. Other top picks included Matsuyama in Ehime (home to the 3,000-year-old Dogo Onsen), Kobe in Hyogo (now easier to reach with new flight routes, known for Arima Onsen and Kobe beef), and Okinawa (mild winter climate and coastal drives). Matsuyama has promoted itself with expanded Korean-language guides and discount coupons to attract Korean tourists. Rakuten Travel says travelers increasingly pick destinations that match personal preferences, so it is promoting a wider range of small-city stays and unique accommodations for the holiday period.
