A 32-year-old Canadian woman experienced severe facial swelling after getting an eyebrow tint at a salon before a trip. Initially fine, she woke the next morning with swollen brows and nose bridge; within hours her whole face puffed up and she could barely open her eyes. She took antihistamines and needed 13 days for the swelling to subside. Doctors suspect an allergic reaction to PPD (para-phenylenediamine), a common ingredient in dark dyes that can cause contact dermatitis, hair loss, itching and swelling, and worsen conditions like psoriasis or atopic dermatitis. Experts advise people who suspect sensitivity to avoid dyeing; if dyeing is unavoidable, space treatments 3–4 months apart and choose products without or with low PPD. If unsure, perform a patch (allergy) test 48 hours before full application by applying a coin-sized amount behind the ear or on the inner forearm and watch for hives or rash.
