The 363.8 km Donghae (East Sea) Line, completed Jan 1 last year, now carries KTX-Eum (a quasi-high-speed train) on the newly finished Pohang–Samcheok section. The route links 34 stations from Bujeon to Gangneung and opens easy access to sunrise spots like Homigot, Jeongdongjin, Wolpo, and Goreabul, plus seafood towns such as Yeongdeok. Some stations (e.g., Goreabul, Uljin, Geundeok) offer dramatic coastal views and local attractions—paragliding launches, coastal skywalks, rail bikes, markets, and hiking. KTX-Eum can reach up to 260 km/h but ran about 200 km/h on Donghae Line due to single-track design and station slowdowns; travel time dropped from about 5 hours to 3 hours 50 minutes, short of the original 2.5-hour goal. Further extension toward Yangyang is planned in two years, promising even faster coastal service. (KTX-Eum: a type of Korean quasi-high-speed train)
