On Jan 15 the new Hwaseong Arts Center Dongtan Art Hall (a 1,450-seat hall) marked its opening with a celebrated concert led by world-renowned conductor Myung-Whun Chung and the KBS Symphony Orchestra, featuring violinist Leonidas Kavakos as soloist. The program included Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35 and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 “Eroica,” showcasing both Romantic and Classical repertoire. Under Chung’s expressive yet powerful direction, the orchestra delivered dense, emotionally rich performances that filled the hall and left a lasting impression. City officials said the series of opening performances—continuing through February with events such as a sinawi orchestra collaboration (sinawi: traditional Korean improvisational ensemble) and a contemporary ballet—aims to establish the venue as a cultural landmark offering high-quality arts experiences to the local community.
