Exhibitions This Week: Artists Portraying the Pain Within Women's Bodies

Two solo shows in Seoul confront the bodily pain women endure. At Arario Gallery in Jongno, Lee Eun-sil’s 'Fago' features ink-and-color works that metaphorically depict the intense struggle of childbirth. A major piece, 'Epidural Moment,' visualizes the hallucinatory sensations after spinal anesthesia as a giant animal, vast nature, and disassembled bones. The show runs through Jan. 31. At Gallery Hyundai (International Gallery) in Jongno, Jang Pa’s 'Gore Deco' juxtaposes grotesque depictions of bodies and organs ('gore') with decorative silk-screened surface imagery ('deco') to criticize how women’s bodies are both objects of desire and violence. That exhibition runs through Feb. 15.
