A gala celebrating the Lee Kun-hee Collection will be held in Washington, D.C. on March 28, with Samsung chairman Lee Jae-yong, Hong Ra-hee (honorary director of the Leeum Museum), and other Samsung family members attending. The collection’s U.S. exhibition at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art (NMAA) has drawn over 40,000 visitors and includes some 330 works—national treasures and important cultural properties such as Goryeo celadon and Joseon white porcelain, traditional paintings by Jeong Seon and Kim Hong-do, and modern works by Park Soo-keun and Kim Whanki. The gala, hosted by Samsung and attended by U.S. political and business figures, celebrates the largest-ever Korean art show in North America and promotes founding chairman Lee Kun-hee’s cultural philanthropy spirit (“munhwa boguk” — culture serving the nation). The collection will continue to travel: next to the Art Institute of Chicago in March and the British Museum in September.
