World-renowned violinist Isabelle Faust and pianist Alexander Melnikov will perform a duo concert at Seoul Arts Center Concert Hall on February 4, marking their first joint visit to Korea in 14 years. The program spans late 19th- to early 20th-century works: Prokofiev’s Five Melodies Op.35 and Shostakovich’s Violin Sonata in G major Op.134 in the first half, and in the second half Schoenberg’s Fantasy Op.47 and Busoni’s Violin Sonata No.2 in E major Op.36a. The concert highlights contrasts between lyricism and introspection, and between 20th-century experimentation and romantic-modern structures. Faust is celebrated for her wide repertoire from classical to avant-garde and has appeared with major orchestras worldwide; Melnikov, praised by the legendary pianist Sviatoslav Richter, is known for his refined tone and structural insight—his recordings of Shostakovich preludes and fugues were named among BBC Music Magazine’s greatest albums.
