Do Calcium Supplements Prevent Osteoporosis?

Cold winter conditions increase falls and fractures. While not all fractures are caused by osteoporosis, people with osteoporosis have weakened bones and higher fracture risk—especially hip, wrist, and spine fractures. Hip fractures often lead to poor outcomes, including high mortality and loss of independence. Osteoporosis is asymptomatic until bone loss or a fracture occurs, and cases in Korea rose substantially from 2020 to 2024. Bone health depends on a balance between osteoclasts (cells that break down old bone) and osteoblasts (cells that build new bone). To prevent osteoporosis, reduce factors that increase bone loss—excess salt, smoking, alcohol, certain medications (like steroids), cola drinks, and caffeine—and support osteoblasts by ensuring adequate nutrients, especially calcium and vitamin D. However, most needed calcium is recycled from bone, and a varied diet (leafy greens, tofu, seaweeds, small fish, dairy) usually supplies enough, so routine calcium supplements are often unnecessary. Supplements don’t automatically become bone; osteoblasts must be able to build bone, which requires healthy genes, sufficient nutrients, and activation of bone-building processes. The author recommends a “New Start” lifestyle (a holistic regimen that includes diet, exercise, sunlight, water, moderation, clean air, rest, and social support) with daily sun exposure (~10 minutes) and regular exercise to ensure vitamin D and bone formation. Be cautious of excessive calcium supplements, which can increase kidney stone risk. If low bone density is detected, focus on correcting harmful habits and adopting the New Start measures rather than immediately turning to supplements.
