Namwon City in North Jeolla Province is teaming up with Wonkwang University through the RISE (Regional Innovation-driven Ecosystem) program to promote edible insects and find new cooking methods. The city announced a recipe contest open to all Koreans, accepting entries until the 28th, with cash prizes for winners (grand prize 1.5 million won). The initiative is part of the 'Namwon Insect Innovation Living Lab' to shift public perception of insect foods and expand their use by developing improved processing techniques, offering seminars and technical training for farmers, and building an insect industry hub. Namwon is already advancing a government-backed project to create a large-scale insect production complex (including a control center, rearing support, processing center, and smart farm rentals) scheduled for completion by late 2027, aiming to position insects as a core bio-industry.
