The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA), co-hosting with SBS Culture Foundation, named multimedia artist Kim Young-eun as the 'Artist of the Year 2025'. Born in Seoul in 1980, Kim studied sculpture at Hongik University and completed advanced studies at Korea National University of Arts. She also trained in sound studies at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and is now a PhD candidate in Film and Digital Media at UC Santa Cruz. A recipient of honors including the Prix Ars Electronica recognition, the SongEun Art Award (송은미술대상), and the ACC Future Award (ACC 미래상), Kim’s work treats sound and listening as politically shaped phenomena. Using a “sound ethnography” approach, she documents and reimagines sounds accumulated across places and times, revealing everyday sonic landscapes often overlooked. Ansoyeon, Artistic Director at Atelier Hermès, praised her as an important artist who skillfully captures the social and political contexts embedded in sound.
