South Korea’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries signed a partnership on Jan 16 with GS Retail, the Gyeongsangnam-do Young Fishermen’s Association, and related agencies under the “Co:어촌 (Co:Ochon)” project to link coastal communities with corporate distribution and marketing. The deal will put 300 tons of scallops produced by young fishers in Gyeongsangnam-do onto GS Retail’s large nationwide network, including direct sales at 583 GS the Fresh stores, and will offer chum mackerel (참숭어) via pre-orders on GS’s online mall (우리동네GS app). Promotional events and pre-order demonstrations will be held at the GS The Fresh Towol store. The arrangement secures stable sales channels for young scallop farmers through raw-product sales before March and value-added processed products after April. The government plans to expand the Co:어촌 project nationwide, pairing fishing-village resources—seafood, landscapes, tourism, culture—with private-sector partners to build sustainable, mutually beneficial models rather than one-way aid.
