Mokpo City has designated four new local heritage sites that document life in modern-era Mokpo: a 1936 house at Geumhwa-dong 3-8 blending Japanese-style architecture with a Western parlor and later Korean ondol (underfloor heating); two former missionary residences on the Jeongmyeong Girls’ School grounds, where 1919 independence movement materials were found during a 1983 renovation; a circa-1920 commoners’ hanok (traditional Korean house) at Bukgyo-dong 143-2 preserving original wooden structure and ritual elements like sangnyangmun; and the Yeonsan reservoir, a 1937-era water facility that is the only remaining Japanese colonial-period reservoir in Mokpo and key to understanding the city’s water infrastructure development. The city says the designations aim to preserve diverse aspects of Mokpo’s modern history and will guide future conservation and community-based use plans.
