The Yeosu City Council urged on Jan. 14 that the special law for administrative integration between Jeollanam-do (Jeonnam) and Gwangju should include a national infrastructure package to boost Yeosu as an international marine tourism city. The council supports integration to counter local decline and Seoul-centric imbalance but warned it must be a ‘qualitative integration’ that benefits both coastal/island and inland areas, not just boundary changes. They highlighted Yeosu’s strengths in south coast tourism, leisure, cruise and MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions) industries, and called for major transport connectivity improvements and national investment in upgrading the Yeosu national industrial complex and attracting large manufacturing projects (e.g., modern auto makers) to Yulchon industrial zone. The council said it will closely monitor the integration process to ensure Yeosu’s interests lead to improved local quality of life, not sacrifice, and asked government bodies to reflect these demands in the special law.
