Seonjae, Korea’s first master of temple cuisine, appeared on Netflix’s cooking competition 'Black & White Chefs 2' to share the temple-food philosophy that food is a form of practice. Although friends advised him not to join a survival show, he hoped to explain why temple cooking avoids meat and five pungent ingredients (오신채: garlic, green onion, chive, wild chive, and leek) and how a cook’s mindset affects diners’ health and happiness. He spoke about recovery from illness through diet, treating seasonal produce as medicine, and acting as a “translator” between ingredients and people. On the show his calm demeanor, respect for ingredients, and supportive attitude—wishing opponents well and valuing cooperation—left a strong impression. He urged busy people to choose seasonal foods for affordable, nature-aligned nutrition.
