The Toledo Museum of Art brings 52 masterpieces spanning 16th–19th century European painting to Seoul in the exhibition “From Rembrandt to Goya,” opening March 21 at The Hyundai Seoul ALT.1. Selected from the museum’s century-long collection, works cover movements from Mannerism and Renaissance through Baroque, Rococo, Neoclassicism and Romanticism. Highlights include El Greco’s Gethsemane-themed 'The Prayer in Gethsemane' (Mannerism), Rembrandt’s 'Young Man with a Feathered Hat' (Baroque), Fragonard’s Rococo favorite 'The Game of Blind Man’s Buff' (까막잡기 놀이), Goya’s 'Wagon and Children' (Romanticism), and David’s reduced-scale 'Oath of the Horatii' (Neoclassicism). The show also explores connections between landscape painting and later Impressionism via John Constable, and presents socially contextual works like Delacroix’s 'The Return of Christopher Columbus' reflecting the Age of Exploration. Organized by Culture & i Leaders with support from the U.S. Embassy in Korea and Hyundai Department Store, the exhibition runs through July 4.
