Stella di Campalto: Montalcino’s Rare, Ever-Changing Brunello

Stella di Campalto, a small biodynamic winery in remote Montalcino, produces only about 10,000 bottles a year of Brunello di Montalcino (BDM). Founded in 1992 by former Milan fashion figure Stella Viola di Campalto, the estate focuses on minimal intervention: no commercial yeasts, no chemical fertilizers, no irrigation, and no fixed blending recipes. The winery farms nine distinct plots on the San Giuseppe site and often ferments each parcel separately, then blends (or releases single-vineyard cuvées) based on seasonal inspiration. Wine names change every year and are never reused, making each vintage unique and highly collectible worldwide. Recent releases include Bacia 2019 and Aria 2018, praised for their structure, minerality and silky tannins; allocations sell out quickly. The estate was awarded First Growth status by Tim Atkin for Montalcino.
