Quiet Revival in Yeongju: Temples, Villages and Local CraftsCreatrip Team
2 months ago
Yeongju, tucked on the slopes of Sobaek Mountain in North Gyeongsang, offers a calm, restorative start to the year through historic temples, traditional Confucian academies, preserved villages and local craftsmanship. The ancient Buseoksa temple, built on a ‘floating stone,’ climbs vertically up the hillside to the national treasure Muryangsujeon hall. Sosu Seowon (Korean Confucian academy) — the country’s first seowon and a UNESCO World Heritage site — invites quiet reflection among pine groves. Musum Village, once reached by a single log bridge (wonamuda ri, “one-log bridge”), preserves 17th–19th century hanok houses where visitors can stay in restored homes. Hike to Birobong peak on Sobaek for sweeping ridgelines (winter conditions require preparation), then warm up with a guided sulfur foot bath at a local cafe. Yeongju’s handmade agricultural tools from Yeongju Blacksmith (영주대장간) gained global fans on Amazon for their quality. Farmstay Nokwonjae offers homegrown breakfasts and solo-team lodging; MilaPla cafe uses imperfect local apples to make signature apple drinks; Bookstore Hari is run informally by owner Jeong with a resident dog “Hari” as mascot. Local eats include spicy jjolmyeon at a retro shop, hearty cheonggukjang made with large ‘Buseoktae’ soybeans, warm mukbap (mung-bean jelly soup), medicinal-course meals, and tender Yeongju beef bulgogi. Yeongju combines gentle scenery, heritage sites and artisanal food and crafts for a peaceful, authentic rural Korean experience.
