“Today Is the Best Day to Fulfill a Dream” — Veteran Actresses Lead Webtoon-Based Play “The Old Woman’s Dream”

The play “The Old Woman’s Dream,” adapted from a 2023 webtoon, opened at LG Art Center in Seoul on Jan. 9. It tells the tender story of two women from different generations: Chun-ae, an 81-year-old who wants to paint her own smiling portrait, and Bom-hee, a 50-something art academy teacher who has lost touch with her dreams. Renowned actresses Son Sook (82) and Lee Il-hwa (55) play the leads in alternating casts alongside other veteran performers. Son, who has macular degeneration and learns lines by listening to recorded scripts, describes aging as a “completion” rather than decline and encourages women in their 50s to embrace this beautiful stage of life. Lee says the role made her reflect on slowing down and becoming more compassionate. The play explores family tensions, generational understanding, and late-life creativity, and runs through March 22 (tickets 55,000–77,000 KRW). (webtoon: a digital comic)
