A viral dessert called Dubai chewy cookie (두바이쫀득쿠키, or 두쫀쿠) has spread beyond specialty cafes into ordinary eateries across South Korea, appearing on menu boards at pizza shops, meat-pie stores, sandwich shops and delivery apps. Made from Dubai chocolate (a mix of kadaif, pistachio spread and chocolate) plus marshmallow, the treat usually sells for over 6,000 won each but continues to sell out as consumers post purchase and homemade videos on SNS. A consumer-cost YouTuber estimated ingredient cost around 2,940 won; rising pistachio prices could push cost ratios as high as 46%. Convenience stores and department store pop-ups have also launched Dubai chocolate desserts, reflecting “experience” and Ditto (디토) consumption trends—people copying popular purchases after repeated exposure on social media. The dessert’s relatively simple recipe has enabled non-bakery small businesses to join the trend, creating a self-reinforcing cycle of supply expansion and growing demand.
