The 2026 Hwacheon Sancheoneo (mountain trout) Festival opened on Jan. 10 in Hwacheon, Gangwon Province, drawing crowds despite strong winds and heavy snowfall. Visitors filled the large frozen river field—about 300,000㎡—to try ice fishing, cheering as trout were pulled up through holes in the ice. Children and adults alike took part, while a popular hands-on event had participants chasing fish in cold water with bare hands. Festive scenes included colorful winter jackets, long vehicle queues for parking, and food stalls serving various trout dishes. The festival runs through Feb. 1 for 23 days.
